Coconut water has been called a “ Fluid of life’ because of its medicinal benefits such as treatment of childhood diarrhea, gastroenteritis, and cholera ( Kuberski, 1980). It is claimed as a natural contender in the sports drink market because of its desirable taste and aroma, nutritional and functional characteristics that are normally present in sports drinks. The micronutrients such as inorganic ions and vitamins present in coconut water play a vital role in aiding the human body’s antioxidant system ( Evans & Halliwell, 2001). It has a large amount of electrolytes (e.g. potassium, sodium, magnesium phosphorus, and calcium) which is believed to be an important alternative solution for oral rehydration.
